Natural ingredients, such as essential oils, are more respectful of the different layers of the epidermis than conventional shaving foam, gel or soap. In fact, even though men's skin is thick, regular shaving makes it more fragile, leading to increased facial sensitivity. To limit feelings of tightness and minor bleeding, the skin must be perfectly prepared, but also protected during and after shaving, whether electric or mechanical.
Prepare your skin for a gentle, effective shave
For all skin types, but particularly the most sensitive, shaving can be a difficult experience. Preparation is therefore an essential step that must not be neglected. Before shaving, we recommend cleansing the face with warm or hot water to relax the skin. An exfoliating treatment can be used to exfoliate the surface of the areas to be shaved, allowing the shaving product to be distributed more evenly.
This initial phase of skin preparation is essential. It removes dead skin on the surface and lifts the hair to facilitate trimming. Numerous products are available on the market, but those sold in pharmacies or parapharmacies are to be preferred. These are less aggressive and better tolerated by the skin. It is also advisable not to use microbead-based exfoliants. A manual scrub, using a glove soaked in a few drops of geranium essential oil, for example, can also be used. Essential oils provide a fresh scent while soothing the skin. They can be applied all over the face, paying particular attention to sensitive areas. A gentle, pleasant shave is therefore possible using only natural products, combining protection and respect for the epidermis.
Skin protection during and after shaving
To protect the skin from irritation caused by the repeated passage of blades, a shaving foam or soap is generally used. However, an essential shaving oil provides equal or even greater comfort. Apricot kernel or sweet almond oil, preferably plant-based, is spread in a thin layer over the entire area to be shaved. A foam can be applied in addition, but the oil normally provides sufficient protection. Important note: always shave in the direction of the hair. This technique may be a little less precise, but it avoids the appearance of pimples and ingrown hairs. On the other hand, the oil's transparency makes it easier to see the beard as the razor passes over it.
After shaving, the skin should be thoroughly washed with lukewarm water to remove impurities from the surface. The final step is to recreate a protective layer, called the hydrolipidic film, using a care product concentrated in essential fatty acids. An aftershave essential oil also helps limit bleeding, thanks to its astringent properties. It is possible to create blends based on a vegetable oil, such as Jojoba, with the addition of other ingredients:
- rose geranium essential oil
- spearmint essential oil
- cistus ladanifera essential oil
